NANA & Maniilaq

According to the Maniilaq website, the Northwest Alaska Native Association (NANA) was founded in 1966 in order to settle the native's land claims issues. NANA began as a non-profit organization but eventually became a for-profit Native Corporation with the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act in 1971. As a for-profit group they changed their name to the NANA Regional Corporation and gave the non-profit organization the name Mauneluk which was then again changed to Maniilaq, a more traditional version of the name. The Maniilaq Association provides health, tribal, and social services to about 6,500 residents in the Northwest Arctic Borough which includes the town of Noorvik. It represents 12 tribes in northwest Alaska and is the region's largest employer with about 500 employees. Maniilaq Health Services is in charge of all the medical, clinical, and nursing services, which includes 11 village clinics throughout the region. Click on the title of this blog for their website.
